Russia: ex-deputy of pro-Putin party sentenced to 9 months of restriction of freedom after confessing to manslaughter
An Ust-Bolsheretsk district court has sentenced ex-deputy of the Kamchatka regional parliament from the United Russia party (Russian biggest, pro-Putin party - translator’s note) and businessman Igor Redkin to nine months of restriction of freedom in regards to the case on manslaughter, reports the Kamchatka region Investigative Committee website.
Redkin also has to pay a fine of 200,000 rubles (€3,200).
A criminal case against Redkin was initiated in August 2021; afterwards, he was immediately expelled from United Russia. He said that he had accidentally shot a man while trying to get a bear to leave the landfill located in the village Ozernovskiy of the Ust-Bolsheretsk district.
“I learned that a bear was roaming the landfill, it could hurt the locals. I took a gun with me and decided to scare him away. In the twilight, I shot at the bear. Later, I learned that at about the same time a local man was wounded in the area of the shooting, he died in the hospital,” he was previously quoted explaining.
The ex-deputy pleaded guilty.
At first, Redkin was charged with murder, which meant he was facing up to 15 years in prison. However, later, the investigators eased the charges to manslaughter. Redkin was also accused of illegal hunting.
Igor Redkin is one of the richest deputies in Russia, he ranks 20th on the list of the richest government officials, according to Forbes. In 2021, his income was 715.7 mln rubles (€11.4 mln). Redkin co-owns several fishing enterprises and aviation companies.
