Prosecution demands 25 years behind bars for Russian politician Vladimir Kara-Murza

Russia’s state prosecution has demanded that Russian politician Vladimir Kara-Murza be jailed for 25 years in a high-security prison, his lawyer Vadim Prokhorov told Novaya Gazeta Europe.

Kara-Murza has been in custody since April 2022. He is facing three charges: high treason, “fakes” about the Russian army, and conducting activities of an “unfavourable organisation” for working with Open Russia.

The Kara-Murza trial is held behind closed doors.

On 16 March, the politician’s lawyer said that he could not have been brought to the hearing over significant health concerns.

On 6 March, the Moscow City Court extended the politician’s arrest by six months. The motion to provide medical records that state that Kara-Murza has polyneuropathy (a condition that rules out detention centre custody) was denied.

On 22 February, lawyer Vadim Prokhorov said that his client was sent to a disciplinary cell for four days for violating the internal regime of the prison according to the administration.
