Zelensky requests urgent UN Security Council session scheduled for midnight

An urgent UN Security Council session on Ukraine will be held at midnight (21.00 GMT), Russia’s permanent mission says.

“Ukrainians, scared by our strikes upon infrastructure facilities, have requested an urgent UN Security Council session. Ukraine’s speaker will again be Volodymyr Zelensky via video call, violating the Security Council procedure,” says Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN.

Zelensky requested an urgent session today, following Russia’s missile strikes on the country.

“The killing of civilians, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, these are acts of terrorism. Ukraine continues to demand a decisive response to these crimes from the international community,” he said.

All Ukraine’s nuclear stations were shut down today, same as most other power-generating facilities. The lack of electricity may lead to issues with heat and water supply in the country.

Three civilians were killed by today’s missile strikes in Kyiv, including a 17-year old woman. Eleven were injured, says Vitali Klitschko, the Kyiv mayor.
