Putin signs decree easing Russian citizenship rules for residents of southern Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree easing Russian citizenship rules for residents of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. The document was published on Russia’s official legal information portal.

The decree enters into force on 25 May.

The same measures were introduced previously for residents of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk “people’s republics.” According to the document, Russian government bodies must consider citizenship applications within three months.

Earlier today, the pro-Russian “government” of the Zaporizhzhia region announced the region’s plans to be incorporated into Russia. Both the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions introduced the ruble zone, allowing payments both in rubles and hryvnias. The exchange rate in the occupied areas is two rubles for one hryvnia.
