Police detain Russian college student during class over Instagram story

Denis Mokrushin, a third year architecture student, was detained by the police in Kazan right in his classroom. He was accused of “discrediting the Russian army” and charged with misdemeanour, according to Apologia, a Russian human rights organisation. He has already been released.

Rim Sabirov, Mokrushin’s litigator, has revealed to Idel.Realii that the reason behind his client’s detention was an Instagram story he had posted on 24 February, the day Russia invaded Ukraine.

Mokrushin has highlighted (made permanently available) the story, which reads: “There’s nothing more I can say to the people who hide in their Telegram channels instead of taking to the streets. Russia acts just like the Nazis did during WW2. Putin is the contemporary Hitler. The Russian people should be disgraced for remaining silent. The people of Ukraine are dying and suffering because of your inertness. I am against this insane war!”

Mokrushin was summoned to the police today, the college clerks handed him an official notice and threatened to forcefully escort him to the police station should he refuse to go.

Earlier on, the students of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) wrote an open letter to the university administration in support of professor Denis Grekov, who was forced to quit after an anti-war post on social media.
