Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law banning pro-Russian political parties in the country, Ukrainian lawmaker Olha Sovhyria, who was one of the proponents of the bill, said.
The law enters into force the day after its publication.
The new law bans the activity of political parties whose programs are aimed to justify or deny the military aggression against Ukraine, or to glorify the aggressors.
A total of 330 people’s deputies of Ukraine voted for the bill, including former members of Opposition Platform — For Life, a pro-Russian party which is now banned in Ukraine.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine suspended the activity of political organisations with ties to Russia. These organisations include Opposition Platform — For Life, Party of Shariy, and Nashi political party. Opposition Platform — For Life later changed its name within Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) to Platform for Life and Peace.
