Andrei Babushkin, head of the Penitentiary System Committee at the Russian Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, has died aged 58, his colleague Eva Merkacheva stated on the council’s Telegram channel.

Babushkin also headed the Committee for Civil Rights.
Merkacheva added that Babushkin had died overnight. He was hospitalised the day before due to a long-standing illness.
In 1996, Babushkin established the Committee for Civil Rights, which he headed until his death. He was part of the team selecting prisoners for the 2000 amnesty. In 2012, he started working at the Russian Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights. Merkacheva noted that people always came to Babushkin’s office with their problems, and he always tried to help.
