Roskomnadzor, Russia’s censorship agency, has started blocking the websites of independent media outlets since the Ukraine War started, most notably TV Rain and Echo of Moscow, a radio station. The latter decided to shut down its broadcasts and website completely, as well as deleting their official social media accounts.

Other blocked media include Meduza, Mediazona, TJ, Caucasian Knot. BBC Russia, TV2, Deutsche Welle, Euronews, Delfi, Bild, and dozens more.

Novaya Gazeta was forced to stop both its printed and digital editions after receiving a second warning from Roskomnadzor, on the brink of having its media licence revoked. Those members of the Novaya Gazeta staff who left Russia founded Novaya Gazeta Europe: a separate project, both legally and virtually, rather than a subdivision of the original Novaya Gazeta.
