“Three people were killed, three were injured, all of them civilians. These are the preliminary results of this morning’s airstrike of the Russians on New York,” he said.

The official said that the missiles had hit an industrial enterprise and residential buildings in the village.

The New York village is located in the Bakhmut District of the Donetsk Region. The village is under the control of Ukraine. The village of Gorlovka, controlled by the self-proclaimed Donetsk “people’s republic” is just 12 miles away from New York.

The village of New York was founded in the 19th century by German-speaking Mennonites, followers of the Menno Simons Protestant movement. They came to Russia on the invitation of Catherine the Great. In 1951, the village of New York was renamed “Novgorodskoye,” however, a year later, it went back to the original name. “Can you imagine the headlines if someone shelled New York? NATO would be here in an instant, and the war would end,” local official Tatyana Krasko said in 2021 in an interview with DW.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia regional officials informed that Russian aviation had attacked residential buildings in the region with Kh-55 air-launched missiles. Three people were injured, including one child. Oleh Synehubov, governor of Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, stated that one person had been killed in Russia’s recent attacks on Kharkiv, and eight were injured.
