Russia slaps individual sanctions on 287 British MPs

Russia has introduced individual sanctions against 287 members of the UK House of Commons, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The sanctions bar entry to Russia for the British MPs who “facilitate escalation of Russophobic hysteria,” the ministry said.

“Not only do the hostile rhetoric and flimsy accusations heard from the UK members of parliament condone the hostile policy of London aimed to demonise and isolate our country internationally, but they are also used by opponents of mutually respectful dialogue with Russia in order to undermine the foundations of bilateral cooperation,” the ministry’s statement reads.

In early March, the UK slapped sanctions on 386 members of the Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament). They are banned from entering the UK or conducting business there. A number of Russian politicians and public figures were also included on the UK sanctions list, including Defence Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov, CEO of Russian Railways Oleg Belozyorov, First Deputy Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Sergei Korolev, and Captain of the Moskva cruiser Anton Kuprin.

The UK earlier banned export of certain goods to Russia which can be used against the people of Ukraine, possibly including surveillance and interception equipment.
