Over 400 bodies exhumed and identified in Bucha, says mayor

Exhumation and identification of bodies in the Ukrainian town of Bucha is nearly complete, Mayor of Bucha Anatoliy Fedoruk informed.

According to the mayor, 412 dead bodies have been found so far, however, this number may change. Investigators and experts are working to determine the exact number of casualties.

“This means that one in three people killed in the Kyiv Region are from Bucha,” Fedoruk said on his Facebook page.

The most important task right now is to identify all victims, the mayor stressed. “This is our shared tragedy.

And we must work hard to identify every innocent person who was killed, and give them a proper burial,”

he said.

On April 15, Kyiv Region Police Chief Andriy Nebitov informed that over 900 people had been killed in the Kyiv Region, including 350 victims found in Bucha.

“There are a lot of mass graves. The majority of victims have gunshot wounds. Two large mass graves were found in Bucha, with 40 bodies found in the first one and 57 in the second one,” he said.

Earlier, Kyiv regional governor Oleksandr Pavliuk stated that over 400 people had been killed in Bucha.

Bucha, a town in the Kyiv Region, had been occupied by the Russian forces for over a month, since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. The Russian Defence Ministry stated that Russian forces had left the town on March 30.

Shortly after that, first reports of civilian victims in Bucha came in. Russia repeatedly dismissed reports of civilian casualties in Bucha as “fake news” and “provocation.”
