ECHR: Russia has to pay Navalny €40,000 for refusing to investigate his poisoning

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that the Russian government has to pay opposition politician Alexey Navalny, currently imprisoned in the Vladimir region penitentiary, a €40,000 compensation due to their refusal to investigate his poisoning, as per the court’s website.

The court has found that Russia had violated Navalny’s rights, specifically Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights that protects the right of every person to their life.

On 4 June, Navalny’s birthday, Russian citizens across the world went out to the central streets of their cities to support the opposition politician. The gatherings took place in at least 120 cities. According to Russian human rights project OVD-Info, at least 109 people were detained in Russia in connection with the protests on that day.
