Archive of Novaya Gazeta articles published on GitHub after newspaper announces closure

An open archive of articles from Novaya Gazeta’s website has appeared on GitHub, containing 93,933 pieces published between 2000 and 2026 and totalling 1.08 GB, according to the project’s description.

The texts are available in Markdown format and preserve headlines, publication dates, author names and links. The archive does not include photographs, video or other media files, though image captions have been retained. The repository also contains tools for downloading the articles.

“The site has announced it will shut down its servers on 9 November 2026, so this archive is a race against that date,” the project description says.

The release comes days after Novaya Gazeta announced its closure. On 30 October, the newspaper said it would vacate its Moscow office and switch off its servers on 9 November. “We have been killed,” the newsroom said in a statement. “The Russian authorities and the Russian security services have forced our editorial team to cease its operations.”

Separately, in early October, the Russian Independent Media Archive (RIMA) said it would publish a complete digital archive of Novaya Gazeta free of charge by 5 November.

In March 2022, after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, much of Novaya Gazeta’s staff left Russia to establish Novaya Gazeta Europe in Latvia.
