Alexey Navalny confirmed to be in Arctic prison after 20-day absence

Jailed Russian politician Alexey Navalny has been located in a penal colony in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region, in the Russian Arctic, Navalny’s spokesperson Kira Yarmysh announced on Twitter on Monday.

“We have found Alexey Navalny. He is now in IK-3 [penal colony number three] in the settlement of Kharp in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District. His lawyer visited him today. Alexey is doing well,” Yarmysh said.

Navalny’s whereabouts have not been known to his team since he was transferred without warning from the prison in the Vladimir region where he was previously being held 20 days ago.

Navalny, who was initially sentenced to 2.5 years in jail for parole violations in 2021, was subsequently given another nine years on charges of fraud and embezzlement in 2022, and then a further 19 years on “extremism” charges in August.
