Only people charged with extremism or terrorism are added to the list, which means Shainyan is facing previously unreported criminal charges in Russia.

The journalist says he is unaware of any charges.

“I do my work faithfully, so subscribe to my channel, like my videos, and follow my notifications, that’s what I have to say on the matter,” he told Novaya-Europe.

Karen Shainyan is openly gay and is known for covering the issues of the LGBT community. Russia declared him “a foreign agent” last April.

In August 2022, a Russian court fined him 10,000 rubles (€90) for failing to use a “foreign agent disclaimer”.
