A court in Russia’s Ufa has sentenced Liliya Chanysheva, the former leader of Alexey Navalny’s presidential campaign in Bashkortostan, to 7 years and six months in prison, SOTA reports.
The prosecutor requested 12 years behind bars for Chanysheva. She has been found guilty of “extremism”, “managing an extremist society using her official position”, and “creating an organisation that violates people’s rights”. The trial was closed to the public.

“If you jail me for 12 years, I won’t be able to give birth to a child. Save me a chance to become a mother,” is how Chanysheva finished her last plea in court on 29 May.
Chanysheva became the first person to be arrested for “creating an extremist community", a criminal case initiated against Alexey Navalny and his associates. She was detained in November 2021 and sent to a pre-trial detention centre. Navalny’s associates Leonid Volkov and Ivan Zhdanov are also involved in the same case.
