Russian court fines online cinema for ‘LGBT propaganda’ among minors for first time

The Saint Petersburg Magistrate’s Court has fined Russian Tricolor Kino and TV video service 1.2 million rubles (€13,200) for spreading “LGBT propaganda” among minors, media outlet RBC reports, citing Russia’s media watchdog Roskomnadzor.

Furthermore, a company official was fined 200,000 rubles (€2,200). The reason for fining the official was not clarified. A Tricolor representative told RBC that the company had already deleted the content it had been fined for.

A RBC source says that Roskomnadzor’s grievances towards Russian video services mainly have to do with the movie Perfect Strangers: one of the characters in the movie comes out to her friends. In 2017, the movie received a distribution licence in Russia, it was labelled 16+. According to RBC, Russia’s Culture Ministry is currently working on withdrawing the licence.

Earlier in the week, Russian online cinemas PREMIER and START as well as mobile phone operator company Megafon had protocols drawn up against them over “LGBT propaganda”. Another protocol was drawn up against film production company Rus Report because of the TV show Made In Italy.
