Turkey’s Erdoğan announces two-month extension of grain deal

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced that parties have agreed to extend the grain deal, an agreement establishing a safe naval passage in the Black Sea for Ukrainian ships transporting agricultural produce, by two more months.

“Moreover, our Russian friends said that they would not obstruct the passage of Ukrainian ships leaving [Ukraine’s] seaports of Mykolaiv and Olvia,” he added.

The Turkish leader thanked his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky as well as UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for “the efforts made” to achieve that.

“We hope we will see the days when the war between Russia and Ukraine ends with a permanent ceasefire first and then peace,” Erdoğan noted.

Last week, the Turkish Defence Ministry reported that two-day talks failed to yield an extension of the grain deal.

The ministry stressed that the grain deal had made “a significant contribution to the food price stability all over the world and is vital from the food supply and security viewpoint”.
