Donald Trump indicted by Manhattan grand jury, becoming first US ex-president to face criminal charges

Former US President Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, CNN and The New York Times report, citing sources.

According to CNN, Trump is facing over 30 counts related to business fraud. The indictment makes Trump the first former or current president of the US to face criminal charges.

“This evening we contacted Mr. Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.’s Office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement, as quoted by CNN.

Trump has been under investigation for his relations with porn star Stormy Daniels. According to court filings, Trump’s then-personal attorney Michael Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 of hush money a month before the 2016 elections so she would not make the information about her alleged affair with Trump in 2006 public. In 2006, Donald and Melania Trump welcomed their son Barron.

The Trump Organisation later reimbursed Cohen, however, it noted the reimbursements as “a legal expense in its internal books” which could be found to be falsification of documents.
