Ukraine’s General Staff says Russian military leaves Nova Kakhovka in Kherson region, later admits announcing so by mistake

Russia’s military has left the town of Nova Kakhovka on the eastern bank of the Dnipro river in the Kherson region, Ukraine’s General Staff has reported in its bulletin.

“Starting from 22 March 2023, all the occupants’ troops stationed in Nova Kakhovka have left the settlement,” reads the statement.

Before leaving, the Russian troops “confiscated” various “household appliances, electronics, jewellery, clothing, cell phones, and other items” off locals, the Ukrainian Armed Forces report.

Update

18:05 UTC Ukraine's General Staff admits that it made a mistake announcing that Russia's troops had left Nova Kakhovka. "The occupants are still there. The announcement was made due to incorrect usage of data," the update reports.

Russia has been occupying most of Ukraine’s Kherson region since March 2022. However, Ukraine regained control of the territory northwest of the Dnipro river which splits the region in two on 11 November, including the regional capital Kherson. Nova Kakhovka is located on the eastern bank of the river.
