ISW: Russian forces launch over 100 missiles at Ukraine on 10 February

On 10 February, Russian forces carried out a new massive missile strike against Ukraine and launched over 100 missiles against critical and civil infrastructure, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports in its daily bulletin.

According to the institute’s experts, the Russian army used, in particular, S-300 surface-to-air missiles, air and sea-based Kh-101/Kh-55 and Kalibr-28 cruise missiles

In the morning bulletin from 11 February, Ukraine’s General Staff reports that 61 Russian missiles were shot down by air defence. Furthermore, Russia conducted 28 air strikes using Shahed-136 kamikaze drones, 22 of them were shot down.

“Russian claims of the scale and effectiveness of the strikes are overblown in comparison to official Ukrainian statements, and Russian forces continue to expend already limited stocks of precision munitions on such strikes,” ISW notes.

Russian troops also fired two cruise missiles from the Black Sea that reportedly crossed Romanian and Moldovan airspace. ISW reports its assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin is unwilling to risk a direct conflict with NATO and that NATO is “in full control over its responses and the degree to which it chooses to escalate in response to accidental or intentional Russian overflights or other provocations”.

Valery Zaluzhny, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said yesterday, 10 February, that Russia’s Kalibr cruise missiles had travelled via airspaces of Moldova and NATO member Romania on their way to hit targets in Ukraine. The Romanian Defence Ministry said that it cannot confirm this information. At the same time, Moldova confirmed that a Russian missile has crossed its airspace.
