Resident of Russia’s Bashkortostan given suspended sentence over charges of attempting to set draft office on fire

A 39-year-old resident of Russia’s Bashkortostan Denis Garayev has been given 1.5 years of a suspended sentence by a Russian court over charges of attempting to set a draft office located in the Isyangulovo village on fire; the corresponding documents have been posted on the website of the court.

The sentence was pronounced on 23 November 2022, but it only came to light now, Kommersant writes.

According to the judicial act, Garayev prepared an incendiary mix and put it in a bottle. Then, he went to the draft office and threw the bottle in one of the windows of the building, “however, he was unable to realise his criminal intent due to circumstances beyond his control”.

As a result of his actions, glazing worth 1,600 rubles (€21) was damaged. Garayev pleaded guilty.

The court considered his surrender, confession, repentment, and the fact that his elderly mother needs outside care due to her health issues to be mitigating circumstances.

On 31 January, the Central District Military Court sentenced Russian national Vladislav Borisenko to 12 years in a penal colony over charges of setting a draft office on fire in the city of Nizhnevartovsk. The man was sentenced under the article “On Terrorist Attack”. That was the first sentence of this kind in Russia’s history. The second person of interest in the case Vasily Gavrilishin refused to plead guilty under this article.

The draft office in Nizhnevartovsk was set on fire in the early hours of 4 May 2022. The arson, according to the footage available, was carried out by two young men who used several Molotov cocktails. The emergency service stated that the fire area was one square metre and no one was hurt. A week later, Borisenko and Gavrilishin were detained and sent to a pre-trial detention centre.
