Russia’s Belgorod region shelled, one person killed

One person was killed in shelling of the Russian city of Belgorod, the governor of the Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov says. Five people were injured.

“In four blocks of flats, glass has been shattered. There has been various damage done in the private sector, too; according to preliminary data, 14 residential houses and 9 cars [have been damaged],” he reported.

Governor Gladkov reports that the number of injured has gone up to eight people. He has also posted photos of the poultry farm damaged in the shelling. “This is where one person was killed and one wounded,” he writes in a Telegram post.

Earlier in the day, he said that an air defence system had been activated over [the city of] Belgorod and the Belgorod district. “There’s an aftermath on the ground. As of now, there is information about four injured. Medical crews are transporting them to the hospital. I’m at the scene,” he previously wrote in a Telegram post.

Local residents have also said that they had, for the first time, received SMS-notifications stating that the area is being shelled and they have to hide in a shelter. There has been no official confirmation of this information as of now.

At the beginning of December, the local government decided to form territorial defence battalions in the region.

In October, the authorities began to install protective structures in the Belgorod region districts, in particular Czech hedgehogs. On 15 November, First Deputy Mayor of Belgorod Valentin Demidov said that the local government was getting ready to publish an interactive map of bomb shelters and place signs with addresses of the near-by shelters all over the city of Belgorod.
