Russia’s Senate allows early release of Alexey Kudrin from his Chairman of Accounts Chamber position

Russia’s Senate (Federation Council), the upper house of the parliament, has released Alexey Kudrin from his position as Chairman of the Accounts Chamber ahead of schedule, Russia’s news agency Interfax reports.

Yesterday, 29 November, the Senate received a notice from Russian President Vladimir Putin that Alexey Kudrin would like to leave the position. Anatoly Artamonov, Chairman of the Budget Committee, said that no new candidates for the post were presented to the president by the committee.

Kudrin himself confirmed that he was leaving the position in a Telegram post yesterday and said that he “would like to focus on working for big projects in the private sector that have a significant effect for the people”.

The Bell recently wrote, citing sources, that Kudrin and Vladimir Putin had agreed on a scheme for dividing the Russian multinational technology company Yandex’s assets. Kudrin will be in charge of a new management structure in the company, which will also include the current management.

After the reorganisation, Kudrin, as well as certain managers who have decided to stay in Russia, will be granted decision-making privileges. Kudrin will also receive about 5% of the shares of the parent company, sources tell The Bell. Arkady Volozh, the founder of Yandex, will receive licences to develop drones, cloud services, Yandex.Practicum, and Toloka abroad.

Yandex has officially confirmed that a restructuring is planned.

According to The Bell, after the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the founder of Yandex turned to Kudrin for help arranging a deal with the Kremlin. Kudrin promised the Kremlin that Yandex would not go abroad, The Bell says, and promised the company itself that it “would not turn into another Rostec or Rostelecom”.
