Moscow IT specialist drafted despite having an exemption. His fellow soldiers say he was killed in combat zone

Timur Izmaylov, an IT specialist at Raiffeisenbank and a resident of Moscow, was drafted into the army despite having a draft exemption, attorney Konstantin Erokhin, who tried to return the conscript home, said.

“Timur was an employee of Raiffeisenbank. He was a key IT specialist who worked with the Mir [payment] system. He was drafted on 23 September and was sent to the combat zone as early as 5 October!” the attorney wrote.

He noted that the Bank of Russia had submitted the lists of specialists who should be exempt from the draft to the General Staff back on 28 September. However, these documents still have not reached the draft board.

Erokhin filed over seven claims and a lawsuit. He contacted hotlines several times to contest Izmaylov’s mobilisation.

Izmaylov’s death was reported by his sister: “On 7 October 2022, at about 3 AM, they woke him and everyone else up after a combat alert was sounded. They took them in full combat gear to the combat zone. They were given three magazines with bullets and several grenades. Since 7 October, there has been no contact with Timur or the guys he was sent there with.

According to his fellow soldiers, on 13 October 2022, Timur and his company came under mortar fire. He was killed.”

Meanwhile, the defence ministry and the military prosecutor’s office claim that there has been no information regarding Izmaylov’s death. “However, we are in touch with the guys from his company. They say that Timur is not with them. They also confirm that they personally saw him get killed and identified him,” the conscript’s sister says.

She contacted the local draft board, the defence ministry, the military prosecutor’s office, and Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin with a request for information about her brother.

Izmaylov’s sister says that he was drafted on 22 September and sent to a military unit in the Moscow region. Five days later, he and his fellow soldiers were sent to the Belgorod region (the city of Valuyki) for combat readiness exercises.

According to his sister, on 3 or 4 October, Izmaylov fell behind his company with several other soldiers as their armoured personnel carrier broke down. He was left without his things, although they spent about 150,000 (€2,480) rubles for his equipment.

On 6 October, he was sent to the Urazovo settlement. On the next day, at about 3 AM, he and other soldiers were taken to the combat zone.

Yesterday, Holod news outlet told the story of a woman who managed to get her husband, a bank employee with an exemption who was about to be drafted, out of the draft office. She had to bring in the prosecutor for that.

Earlier, the Russian Defence Ministry stated that specialists in certain spheres would be exempt from the draft within the “partial mobilisation”. This includes employees of accredited IT companies, “system-forming” telecom operators, media employees, as well as bank workers.
