Schoolgirl detained in Russia’s Kazan for trying to set draft office on fire

A 17-year-old school student has been detained in Russia’s Kazan for staging an arson attempt at a draft office, Baza Telegram channel reports.

According to the channel, at night, the schoolgirl arrived near a local draft office building. She brought three Molotov cocktails with her. The student threw two Molotovs at the building, but she could only set fire to the grass several metres away from the draft office wall.

The police found a third bottle with a flammable substance on her. The schoolgirl said that she wanted to set fire to a draft office as a sign of protest against the war in Ukraine and the mobilisation, Baza notes.

Local media company TATMEDIA also reports that an underage girl was detained for attempting to set fire to a draft office.

Irina Volynets, the human rights commissioner in Russia’s Tatarstan, where the incident took place, provided a comment on this report to RTVI TV channel. According to her, so far, there has been no official confirmation of this.

“Preliminary information suggests the girl is 17. We need to determine all the circumstances: who pushed her towards this step, if it really did happen, where she got the Molotov cocktails from. It’s unlikely that the girl would be able to make them herself. There is a big possibility that a group of people used the child to achieve their goals,” Volynets said.

An unknown man attempted to set fire to a draft office in Krasnoyarsk, Baza and NGS24.RU news outlet report, citing their sources.

Arson attempts at Russian draft offices have become more frequent since the announcement of a “partial mobilisation”. On 30 September, Russian army official Vladimir Tsimlyansky said that the arson attempts would be treated as terrorist attacks by the police. The perpetrators may face up to 15 years in jail.
