Russian court slaps fine on Novaya Gazeta for publishing video condemning war in Ukraine

A Moscow court has slapped a 300,000-ruble (about €4,600) fine on Novaya Gazeta (Moscow) for “spreading fake news that led to a threat of mass violations of public order or public security”. The information on the case was published on the court’s website.

According to TASS, the fine was issued over a video address of Novaya Gazeta Editor-in-Chief Dmitry Muratov published on 24 February, in which he condemned the war in Ukraine.

The video itself was blocked upon request of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office and censorship agency Roskomnadzor. The team of Novaya Gazeta considers it an act of military censorship.

On 28 March, Novaya Gazeta was forced to suspend operations after it received a second warning from Roskomnadzor.

In June, Muratov announced the launch of NO, a spin-off magazine to Novaya Gazeta. There will also be a corresponding YouTube channel.
