Children born in Russia-occupied Kherson after 24 February to get Russian citizenship

All children born in the Kherson region after 24 February will automatically get Russian citizenship, Russian state news agency TASS reports, citing the “deputy head” of the occupation administration of the region Kirill Stremousov.

“Meanwhile, orphans have already received Russian passports,” he added.

On 25 May, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree easing Russian citizenship rules for residents of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. On 11 June first Russian passports were issued in Kherson and Melitopol (Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region).

Vladimir Saldo, the “head of the military-civil administration” of the Kherson region according to Russian state media, said during the citizenship ceremony: “All our comrades from Kherson want to receive the [Russian] passport and citizenship as soon as possible.”

It was previously reported that both regions were switching to +7, the phone code of Russia.
