French parliament recognises Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainian people

The French National Assembly has recognised Holodomor to be a genocide of the Ukrainian people, the Parliament’s lower house reports on its website.

A total of 168 MPs voted in favour of the decision, and only two voted against it. In their resolution, the MPs stated that the 1930s famine in Ukraine was caused deliberately and differed in its scale with famines in other parts of the Soviet Union.

“The recognition of 1932-1933 Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people is important and significant. We are grateful to France for the strong contribution in exposing the crimes of totalitarian Russia, both past and present, and also in establishing truth and justice, and therefore responsibility. Thank you, France!” the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted.

The European Parliament passed the resolution to recognise the Holodomor as a Ukrainian genocide in December 2022.

“MEPs strongly condemn these acts, which resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians, and call on all countries and organisations that have not yet done so to recognise it as genocide,” the announcement read.

In late November, Germany also recognised the Holodomor as a genocide. The Bundestag’s resolution reads that it represents “a crime against humanity”. Similar decisions were made in 2022 by parliaments of Iceland, Belgium, Romania, Moldova, Czechia, and Bulgaria.
