Russian journalist Andrey Arkhangelsky fined for 'discrediting army' in Novaya Gazeta article

Russian journalist Andrey Arkhangelsky has been fined for “discrediting” the Russian army, the court case materials show.

The fine is not specified. Baza earlier reported that Arkhangelsky was ordered to pay 50,000 rubles (€610).

The article in question that attracted the attention of the Russian authorities is called “No words, only redactions” and was published in Novaya Gazeta on 6 January 2023. The text was centred around the “word of the year” and “expression 2022” in Russia.

“The special military operation, expression of the year, is a usual attempt to disguise the horror of everything that happened under the awkward bureaucratic veil,” the article reads.

The investigation team “analysed” the text and discovered “linguistic and psychological patterns of conversational discreditation of the use of the Russian armed forces”.

“[The article] aims to discredit the use of the Russian armed forces and to establish a false opinion regarding the true goals and tasks of the use of the Russian armed forces in the special military operation,” the court ruling reads.

In January, Novaya Gazeta was fined 500,000 rubles (€6,100) for discrediting the Russian army for conducting an interview with a priest who openly opposes the Ukraine war.

The fine protocol was drafted in December for Tatyana Britskaya’s interview with Russian Orthodox Church priest Andrey Kordochkin published in Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta. Kordochkin is a clergy member who openly stands against the Ukraine war.
