Russia attacks Ukraine with drones overnight, kills at least one

Russia attacked Ukraine with Shahed kamikaze drones overnight, as per Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

“The enemy attacked Ukraine with Iranian Shahed drones in the early hours of 27 February from the north. A total of 14 kamikaze UAVs were launched, of which 11 were taken down by air defence units,” reads the statement.

One person was killed and two were injured by the drone attack in the city of Khmelnytskyi, says local mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn. Several buildings were damaged, and firefighting missions continue in the city.

Kyiv was also targeted. A total of nine UAVs were downed in the city, says Serhiy Popko, the local military administration chief. He also noted that the drones came “in two waves with maximum intervals”.

“This way the enemy was trying to achieve its tactical goal, to wear out our air defence. This is why the latest air raid in Kyiv lasted for five and a half hours,” Popko explained.

No people were injured, nor any infrastructure facilities were damaged in the Ukrainian capital, Popko added.

Authorities of the Zaporizhzhia region also reported an overnight drone attack that damaged an infrastructure facility but injured no people.

Three UAVs were downed, including one over the region of Chernihiv, Operational Command North reports.

Three people were injured in Kherson following Russia’s artillery shelling on 25 February, Andriy Yermak, head of the office of the Ukrainian president, said.

According to the Kherson regional administration, the city had been shelled nine times by the afternoon of 25 February. Residential buildings, a preschool, and a medical facility were damaged.
