US midterm elections: GOP inching towards a House majority, Senate still up for grabs

CNN, NBC, and Fox News report that Republican candidates are leading in the 2022 US midterm elections that will shape the Congress and the legislative agenda of the country for the next two years.

All voting stations are closed in the country, the votes are being counted and tabulated.

According to the data available at this hour, the Republicans have secured 195 House seats, while the Democrats are trailing behind with 174, CNN reports. FoxNews, meanwhile, writes that 198 seats are going to GOP candidates, while the Democrats are getting 168. NBC projects that the Republicans will win the majority in the House with 220 representatives, showing the Democrats falling short of keeping the House with 215 seats.

In order to control the House of Representatives, a party needs to win 218 seats.

It is still unclear, however, which way the Senate will go. As of now, the two main parties are winning 48 seats each, while the remaining 4 races will determine whether the Democrats can maintain their hold over the upper chamber.

The US midterm elections were held on 8 November.

It was earlier reported that election officials in Arizona faced more than 100 threats of violence on the eve of the elections. “The harassment in Maricopa County included menacing emails and social media posts, threats to circulate personal information online and photographing employees arriving at work,” Reuters writes.
