Russia to set up draft office on border checkpoint with Georgia 

Russia will set up a draft office on the Verkhny Lars checkpoint on the border with Georgia in the near future, local police reported.

The police noted that the number of cars travelling to the Georgian border is significantly increasing. The situation on the border is “extremely tense”, they added.

“In order to lower the risk of unlawful behaviour and to avoid conflicts, it was decided to allow citizens to cross the border on foot,” the police also stated.

Yesterday, it was reported that Russians travelling to Georgia had been allowed to cross the border on foot due to major traffic jams near the border.

RBC newspaper previously reported, citing the local Federal Security Service (FSB) department for North Ossetia–Alania, that a scooter or a bike were required to cross the border. This is due to the fact that this is an automobile checkpoint.

Earlier, the FSB stated that it had sent an armoured personnel carrier to the Verkhny Lars checkpoint on the border with Georgia “in case someone attempts to break through the border checkpoint”.
