Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to the 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine proposed by the United States coolly on Wednesday, cautioning the various parties involved not to “get ahead” of themselves, state news agency TASS has reported.
Speaking to reporters at his daily press conference, Peskov said that the Kremlin was “closely studying” the statements issued after Tuesday’s US-Ukraine talks in Jeddah, and that it expected to be given more information about the proposal in due course.
While Peskov did not rule out the possibility of a call between Putin and US President Donald Trump, he stressed that no such conversation had yet been organised.
Peskov’s comments follow Tuesday’s high-level talks between the US and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, after which Kyiv announced Ukraine’s willingness to observe a 30-day ceasefire agreement if Russia would.
While the Kremlin has neither agreed to or rejected the proposed ceasefire, one senior Russian source speaking anonymously told Reuters on Wednesday that it would be “difficult” for Vladimir Putin to accept the ceasefire in its present form given Russia’s current pace of advance in both Ukrainian-held areas of the Kursk region and in eastern Ukraine.
