A street camera in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk has captured the moment a man “fell” to his death from the 11th floor of the Russian Investigative Committee’s building in the city, regional news outlet NGS24 reported on Tuesday.
The man, whose identity has not been verified by official sources, died after falling through the roof of an adjacent two-storey building, the outlet wrote.
Citing the Investigative Committee’s press service, NGS24 said that an inquiry into the man’s death had been opened, adding that the deceased had been at the Investigative Committee to answer questions about an unspecified criminal case.
Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda subsequently identified the man as Alexander Lapin, and local Telegram channel Yeniseysky Dozor said that Lapin had been being questioned over an ongoing criminal investigation into corruption charges made against former Krasnoyarsk deputy mayor Alexey Davydov.
Lapin, who used to head the Krasnoyarsk green construction department from May to November 2023, according to a law enforcement source who spoke to regional news outlet Prospekt Mira, was described by Telegram channel Sibirsky Gambit as a former ally and “close friend” of Krasnoyarsk Mayor Vladislav Loginov who was in possession of “overwhelming evidence of corruption in the city administration”.
The channel claimed that men tied to Loginov had threatened Lapin’s ex-wife, which ultimately led to Lapin’s alleged suicide, adding that the mayor had “lost touch with reality”.
