One woman was killed and another 16 people were injured in a Russian missile strike on the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv overnight, Mykolayiv Governor Vitaliy Kim said on Tuesday.

The Russian military attacked the city with S-300 surface-to-air missiles at around 2:30am local time, Kim said, damaging residential buildings, civilian infrastructure and a restaurant complex. Three of the 16 people wounded had been taken to hospital for their injuries, he added.

While firefighters extinguished two fires that broke out in a residential area following the strike, efforts to put out a 1,400-square-metre fire in another part of the city were ongoing, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on Tuesday morning.

According to Kim, air defences in the region had also downed three Shahed attack drones launched by Russia overnight.

In its morning briefing on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Air Force said that Russia had launched a total of seven missiles at the country’s Mykolayiv region overnight, as well as another two cruise missiles at the northern Chernihiv and northeastern Sumy regions.

While the Ukrainian Air Force had been unable to intercept the missiles, it said it had shot down 12 of the 17 drones launched by Russia overnight, with a further four believed lost due to “active electronic warfare”.

According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, the night of Sunday 14 October was the first night since August that Russia did not launch a single Shahed drone strike at the country.

September marked the first month since the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion that Russia carried out daily Shahed drone attacks on Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence said, with Ukrainian air defences managing to down 1,107 of a total 1,339 drones launched at it by its neighbour.
