Death toll from Russian strike on Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv rises to 4

The death toll from a Russian missile strike on the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv on Friday has risen to four, the city’s mayor Oleksandr Synkevych said on Saturday morning.

A man died in hospital of wounds sustained in Friday’s strike, Synkevych said, bringing the total number of deaths from the attack to four, including one child. A total of 24 people were injured, Mykolayiv Governor Vitaliy Kim said on Saturday morning.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said it had opened a criminal investigation into the cruise missile strike on a residential area that took place just after 5pm local time on Friday, damaging apartment buildings and a kindergarten playground.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote that the attack showed there was “not enough pressure” on Russia and called for “new measures” to support Ukraine’s air defences and for Russia to “feel the power of the world”.

Two people were also killed in a separate missile attack in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region in the early hours of Saturday morning, Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synyehubov wrote on Telegram.

A Russian Iskander missile struck an infrastructure facility in the city of Barvinkove, Synyehubov said, damaging over 50 residential buildings and leaving a further three people injured.

Ukraine’s Air Force said on Saturday morning that Russia had launched 17 drones, of which it managed to intercept 13, and four missiles at targets across the country overnight.
