Murderer and rapist freed after 16 months of sentence to fight in Ukraine

Georgy Povilayko, a convicted murderer and rapist from Vladivostok in the Russian Far East, has been released from prison to fight in Ukraine after serving only 16 months of his 24-year sentence.

In August 2021, Povilayko brutally raped and murdered Anna Koshulko, a mother of two children, in a parking garage as she was getting ready to leave for work. “She kept screaming, but no one came to help. No one,” her husband Alexander told Novaya Gazeta.

Povilayko started serving his 24-year sentence in June 2022, but a little over a year later, in October 2023, he signed a contract with the Russian Defence Ministry and secured an early release to fight in Ukraine.

Koshulko’s husband, Alexander, has petitioned the Russian authorities demanding Povilayko’s return to prison, but has yet to receive a response.

“If he dies a dog’s death there — fine. But what if he comes back? I’ve recently read that a serial killer from Yaroslavl came back home after an injury. God forbid Povilayko gets a discharge, too,” Alexander said.
