Adam Kadyrov, the 16-year-old son of Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya, has been appointed an observer in the Sheikh Mansur Rifle Battalion, a Chechen deputy in Russia’s State Duma, has revealed.
“The appointment was only natural in view of Adam’s considerable merit in defending the religious, family and cultural values of our people,” Duma Deputy Adam Delimkhanov said. Kadyrov was also awarded the Sheikh Mansur battalion’s honorary star.
The battalion’s commander, Ruslan Geremeyev, was a suspect in the murder case of Boris Nemtsov, the liberal politician gunned down in Moscow in 2015.
In August, Adam Kadyrov was filmed beating up a defenceless suspect in custody who had been transferred to pre-trial detention in Chechnya ahead of his trial for allegedly burning a Quran.
Since a video of the physical assault went viral in September, Adam Kadyrov has been made a Hero of Chechnya by his father, and has received awards from four other Muslim-majority Russian regions.
