Ukrainian journalist goes missing on assignment in Russian-occupied Ukraine

A Ukrainian journalist has gone missing while on assignment in one of the regions of Ukraine currently occupied by Russia, Ukrainska Pravda and The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) reported on Wednesday.

Victoria Roshchyna, a 26-year-old journalist and freelance writer for Ukrainska Pravda, one of Ukraine’s main media outlets, departed Ukraine on 27 July and planned to travel through Russia to reach the occupied regions of eastern Ukraine. The last time Roshchyna made contact with her editors was on 3 August, by which time she said she was already in occupied eastern Ukraine, although she never specified her exact location. There has now been no news from her for two months.

“We ask our peers in the human rights and press freedom space to join our demand for information on Roshchyna’s whereabouts and stand with journalists continuing to bring truth to light amid Russia’s invasion,” the IWMF said in a statement.

The editor-in-chief of Ukrainska Pravda, Sevgil Musayeva, has called on the Ukrainian authorities to help locate Roshchyna.

In March last year, while travelling from Berdyansk in the Zaporizhzhia region to Mariupol in the Donetsk region, Roshchyna was detained by Russia’s Federal Security Service for 10 days.
