Crimea attacked by 20 Ukrainian drones, Russia’s Defence Ministry claims

In the early hours of 12 August, the Russian army repelled attacks from 20 Ukrainian drones in Crimea, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

According to the statement, 14 drones were destroyed by an air defence system, while the other six were “suppressed by electronic warfare means”. There were no casualties or damages reported.

Another drone was shot down tonight in the Kaluga region of Russia, the local governor Vladislav Shapa said. No one was hurt in the attack.

Yesterday, 11 August, a drone exploded in the north-west of Moscow. The defence ministry claimed that the drone had been destroyed by electronic warfare and “crashed in a forest area west of Moscow”.

Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that a Ukrainian Bober drone was used in the attack on Moscow. Allegedly, it was launched from the direction of the Cherkasy region of Ukraine. Initially, its presence was detected near Moscow’s Vnukovo airport, which led to the airport’s airspace being closed for an hour.

One of the running theories is that the Ukrainian drones shot down in the Moscow region on 9 and 10 August were conducting reconnaissance. Kommersant noted that it was possible those attacks let Ukraine find a breach in Moscow’s defences.

The newspaper also reported that there were no striking elements found in the explosion device installed on the drone downed on 11 August in the north-west of Moscow.
