Relatives of Yangulbaev brothers, Chechen activists, forced to go to Ukraine war as ‘volunteers’

Four relatives of Saidi Yangulbaev, a former Supreme Court of Russia judge, have been forced to go to the Ukraine war as “volunteers”, Saidi’s son Abubakar, an activist and formerly a lawyer with Committee Against Torture, says.

On 3 August, he was informed that Saidi Yangulbaev’s brother Said-Akhmed, as well as three of his nephews, Khasan, Adam, and Yusup, were sent to the frontlines. The former lawyer noted that none of the four had received draft cards but were rather forced to go to war using threats. Khasan Yangulbaev had tuberculosis in the past, and he is currently a father of an infant, same as Adam, the former lawyer says.

The four are currently in Donetsk. Said-Akhmed and Adam were recently seen in a video about “volunteers”, posted by Ramzan Kadyrov, the governor of Chechnya.

Zarema Musaeva, the mother of the Yangulbaev brothers and the wife of Saidi Yangulbaev, was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison by a Grozny court on 4 July. Her son Ibragim, Abubakar’s brother, is accused of “public calls for terrorism” in Russia.
