Poland arrests Belarusian national for spying for Russia

He is the 16th person detained on suspicion of being involved in Russia’s spy network

Belarusian national Mikhail A. has been arrested in Poland on charges of spying for Russia. He is the 16th person detained on suspicion of being a member of Russia’s spy network in the country, Polish Interior Ministry Mariusz Kamiński reported.

“The Polish Internal Security Agency has detained another person, the sixteenth already, who is suspected of being a part of Russia’s spy network. Belarusian national Mikhail A. was surveilling military facilities and ports. He also engaged in propaganda activities in favour of Russia. He has been placed in custody,” the minister wrote.

Polsat News writes that the man, 39, was detained on 1 August. He has been residing in Poland since 2021.

Earlier, Polish intelligence services arrested 15 people on charges of spying for Russia. The last detainee was a Ukrainian citizen, who was arrested on 10 July for suspected of monitoring military facilities and sea ports on Russia’s orders. In late June, the Polish police arrested a Russian hockey player, 28. Agency notes that the available reports about the man point to him being Maxim Sergeev, who was playing for Zagłębie Sosnowiec.
