Novaya Gazeta reporter Elena Milashina discharged from hospital

Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashina and attorney Alexander Nemov, who were brutally attacked in Chechnya’s Grozny on 4 July, have been discharged from hospital, Novaya Gazeta reports.

Both of them will have to undergo additional rehabilitation. Milashina has broken fingers, while Nemov cannot move well due to a knife wound in his leg.

Novaya Gazeta points out that both are in good spirits and are ready to get to work as soon as they can.

Earlier, Milashina was diagnosed with a cranial injury, up to 14 carpal bone fractures, and multiple haematomas.

On 4 July, Milashina and Nemov arrived in the Chechen capital Grozny for the sentencing of Zarema Musaeva, mother of persecuted human rights activists, who was kidnapped by Chechen law enforcement in January and condemned to 5.5 years in prison.

On their way from the airport, their vehicle was blocked by armed men who beat them up brutally and destroyed their technical equipment. Nemov recounted that the attackers threatened to shoot them and pointed a gun at their heads.

On the same evening, they were transported to a hospital in Moscow.

Chechnya’s Investigative Committee later reported that a criminal case had been opened over “deliberate infliction of moderate bodily harm” and "deliberate infliction of light bodily harm” in regard to the attack on Milashina and Nemov. There are still no suspects in the case.
