White House confirms plans to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions

The White House has confirmed that the United States would provide Ukraine with cluster munitions, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said during a briefing.

“We recognise that cluster munitions create a risk to civilians which is why we have deferred the decision as much as we could,” he explained.

According to Sullivan, Ukraine has provided “written assurances” about minimising “any risk” to the civilians. Ukraine previously submitted a written request asking to be provided with the weapons.

Yesterday, The New York Times reported on the US plans to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions. Ukraine stated that the weapons would help with the counteroffensive. On Wednesday evening, a US Presidential Administration employee confirmed to NYT that the decision would be made.

The Convention on Cluster Munitions entered into force in 2010. It prohibits all use, transfer, production, and stockpiling of cluster munitions. However, the US, Russia, China, and Ukraine have not signed it.
