Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod: students made to move out from university dorm so draftees can be given temporary accommodation

Students of the Minin Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University were made to move out from their dorm — the students’ rooms were used to house draftees, the Nizhny Novgorod region Ministry of Education and Science reports.

User Maria Lazareva commented on a post of the region’s governor Gleb Nikitin asking him to explain the situation, local media outlet VGorodeN notes. The woman added that it was mostly young women who lived in the dorm. The dorm management referred to the governor’s order when asked for the reason they had to move out.

In its reply, the regional Ministry of Education states that the Nizhny Novgorod region is implementing measures to “meet the needs” of Russia’s Armed Forces.

“One of the measures is establishing temporary accommodation centres for mobilised citizens deployed to the zone of the special military operation. The [dorm building] has the best location to implement the aforementioned measures,” the ministry explained in a comment.

Furthermore, the mobilised servicemen will be placed in the dorm for a short period of time during summer holidays. The ministry promised to ensure safe conditions for the students and to find them placement in other dorms.

“During the period of summer holidays, [this dorm] will house Nizhny Novgorod region residents from the far away areas of the region who decided to voluntarily go defend the interests of our Homeland in the special military operation.

“You have to agree that our task in this case is to help!” the ministry emphasised.

On 16 June, it was reported that seven students of the history faculty of the Saint Petersburg State University were expelled after speaking out against the war in Ukraine.
