Manchester City win 1st UEFA Champions League in club’s history, beat Inter Milan 1:0 in Istanbul

English football club Manchester City have won the first UEFA Champions League trophy in the club’s history, beating Italian side Internazionale Milan with the score of 1:0.

Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium hosted the final. The only goal in the fixture was scored by Spanish defensive midfielder Rodri 68 minutes into the game.

Manchester City have completed a classic treble by winning this season’s Premier League, FA Cup, and now the Champions League, becoming the second English side to have won the three major trophies in the same season after Manchester United’s feat in 1999.

Manchester City outplayed Real Madrid in the semi-final at 5:1 on aggregate. Inter defeated their domestic rivals AC Milan, scoring three goals against zero over two legs.

Manchester City won a Champions League final at the second attempt after losing 1:0 against English club Chelsea in 2021 and exiting the tournament in earlier stages each time since 2011.

Today’s victory won the team from Manchester its second European trophy after the triumph in the prestigious UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, now non-existent, dated 1970.

Unlike Manchester City, Inter won the Champions League before, most recently in 2010, and twice in the 1960s. The club’s 2010 Champions League semi-final was won against Barcelona of Spain, led by head coach Pep Guardiola, the current manager of Manchester City.
