Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, Ukrainian hydroelectric power plant operator, has stated that the destroyed Kakhovka HPP is beyond repair, as per the facility’s HQ.
“The Kakhovka HPP is beyond repair. After this territory is unoccupied, we’ll have to build a new one. We are currently developing a project on where it is going to be located,” he said.
Syrota also added that the priority now is to barricade the destroyed dam and to provide the population, the agriculture, and the industrial facilities with water supply.
Ukrhydroenergo will accumulate water on upstream reservoirs so as to “fill the Kakhovka reservoir with water as quickly as possible after the de-occupation‘’.
“It is going to take us at least 5 years to build a new power plant there if we work 24/7. We need about a billion UAH (around $27 million) for this. We don’t know many details yet: not just the power plant, but also the passages, as well as water and gas supply, were damaged,” Syrota said.
The water level is still rising in Kherson, but slower than before, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry has stated. Over 1800 houses have been flooded in Kherson’s Korabelny district, as well as 20 settlements on the western (Ukraine-controlled) bank of the Dnipro river.
