Erdoğan wins Turkish presidential election runoff

Incumbent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been reelected for another term with 52.16% of the votes after 99.85% ballots were tallied, Anadolu reports, citing Turkey’s Supreme Election Council head Ahmet Yener.

Erdoğan’s opponent, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, managed to garner 47.86% of the votes. The election council chief noted that the difference between the candidates stands at 2,253,478 votes.

Erdoğan announced his victory last evening, ahead of the final tally. He was congratulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Joe Biden, UN chief Antonio Guterres, NATO head Jens Stoltenberg, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Armenia, Sweden, Israel, Libya, and other countries.

Kılıçdaroğlu, main opposition candidate in the election, told his supporters following the election late on 29 May that he would continue his political fight.
