Russian man fined €1,200 for ‘LGBT propaganda’ over dating site bio

A Russian court has fined a 20-year-old resident of the city of Volgograd 100,000 rubles (€1,200) for “LGBT propaganda”, the press service of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.

According to the ministry, the male resident of Volgograd posted “materials promoting non-traditional sexual relations and preferences” online.

This is the first case of a person being held accountable for this offence in the region, the ministry told Russian news agency Interfax. According to the case files, law enforcement found that the bio on a dating website posted by the resident was “LGBT propaganda”, Interfax notes.

On 5 December, Putin signed a law completely banning “LGBT propaganda” in Russia. The document stipulates the ban of “propaganda” of “non-traditional relations”, paedophilia, and sex changes on the Internet, in the media, books, films, and commercials.
